Celebrating 5 Years of Changing Lives: A Journey of Impact
In honor of our 5-year anniversary, we sat down with our COO, Lea Berhane, who has passionately guided Changing Lives over the past five years. Here’s her inspiring story:
Why did StarVista stop hosting the Starting Line Breakfast and Taste of the Peninsula?
“When I began my journey at StarVista in 2019, our CEO Sara and the Board were fervently working to reinvent our fundraising strategy. When I assumed the role of Development & Marketing Director, we embraced an annual fundraising event that truly resonated with our mission. As a result, we bid farewell to the Taste of the Peninsula and Starting Line Breakfast in 2020, paving the way for a transformative approach to our outreach and impact.”
How did the name Changing Lives come about?
The Mission Advancement Committee, included myself, marketing & development staff members, our CEO, and some Board members. Together, we brainstormed several potential names. Ultimately, “Changing Lives” resonated the most with everyone and received the highest number of votes. The name encapsulates the essence of our mission.
What were some of the things you initially focused on besides a new event name?
Our Marketing and Development teams put in tremendous effort to create cohesive branding. We implemented branding guidelines, designed color templates, and created the Changing Lives image. We also emphasized three mission-focused areas: inspiring hope, empowering individuals, and strengthening communities. Our goal was to establish a strong and unified brand identity.
How was the first Changing Lives event?
We had to make a significant pivot due to unforeseen circumstances of COVID and the beginning of the pandemic. I drafted clear communication, carefully avoiding the word “cancellation.” We rescheduled the event from March to May and successfully transitioned to a virtual format. In fact, we were one of the first nonprofit fundraisers in San Mateo County to host a virtual gala. This experience showcased our adaptability and commitment to our mission.
How were the events in the following years?
In these five years, despite facing moments of uncertainty, we’ve crafted countless beautiful chapters. Each year, marked by dedication, transformation, and an unwavering commitment to change, tells its own inspiring story. Let’s take a trip down memory lane:
**May 2020:** We launched our inaugural Changing Lives virtual event with Congresswoman Jackie Speier kicking off our program. This year also saw the birth of our Visionary Community, a commitment to donate for five consecutive years, which eventually evolves into our Major Gifts program.
**October 2021:** Aligning Changing Lives with World Mental Health Day, we held another successful virtual event, with Congresswoman Jackie Speier once again gracing us as a speaker. Our Visionary Community continued to grow and thrive.
**October 2022:** We hosted our first in-person Changing Lives event at the Farallon Room, an unforgettable and well-attended celebration. The Visionary Community’s growth remained a highlight.
**October 2023:** The Farallon Room was again the venue for our inspiring event. Congressman Kevin Mullin opened with a heartfelt introduction. Our speakers included the founder of our Kids Kamp program and our first board member who benefited from our programs as a teenager. The Visionary Community’s expansion continued strong.
**October 2024:** Each chapter brings heartfelt stories, and this year is no exception. Our speakers included Congressman Kevin Mullin and an inspiring client who is now a Visionary Community member, among others.
These moments are a testament to our resilience, adaptability, and the power of community. Each event, each story, each shared experience has reinforced our commitment to change lives for the better.
