“I am absolutely thrilled to be part of the StarVista team. This organization has a long history of serving the San Mateo County community, and everywhere I turn—whether volunteers, staff, leadership team, board of directors, or the many valued business partners we have, the passion and commitment to service and changing lives is a joy to witness and now be a part of.”
A native Michigander and US Army veteran, Mike completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Phoenix and went on to earn an MBA from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business. He resides in San Ramon, CA with his wife and daughters.
How did you first discover StarVista?
Through a recruiter’s recommendation who knew of the role and leadership team, and that I had joining a non-profit on my short list of organizations to work for.
Could you share more about your career journey and why you decided to join as StarVista’s CFO?
I’ve been very fortunate to work for great leaders and with great teams in diverse industries for both public and private organizations. My positive board experiences with nonprofits earlier in my career have stayed with me, and it was just clear that after my last three CFO roles I really wanted to support a mission-centric organization, one where our work is clearly that of service to each other and those in our community who need us.
What are you most looking forward to as StarVista’s new CFO?
Continuing to provide financial leadership and guidance to an amazing group of volunteers, staff members, leaders and our board—we’ve got 55 years of organizational history behind us, and I don’t take that for granted for a second—it’s imperative we lean on that to help guide and shape our future.
What is one thing you would like for people to know about StarVista?
We have hundreds of trained people in dozens of programs throughout San Mateo County, who are here for the sole purpose of helping children, teens, adults and families in our community live their best lives. We’re always looking for new opportunities or the ability to grow our existing programs—we’re here for you.
How does your role support the long-term sustainability of our organization?
We need to be the very best stewards we can of the assets entrusted to us by our community. People and organizations trust us with their money, their time, and that’s something many people who came long before me had to earn. Part of my role is to ensure we have the tools, technology, and teams in place to efficiently deploy those resources to the best of our ability, showing our stakeholders that investing in StarVista is a very worthwhile investment in our community.
What are your current hobbies?
Reading (mostly history and biographies), golf, mahjong, and the ongoing search for that elusive perfect Excel spreadsheet.
