StarVista’s Service Departments | An Impact Recap 

December 2023 

Every year, our counseling, case management, skill development, and crisis prevention programs reach tens of thousands of people in San Mateo County. Thanks to our nearly 30 programs under our four main service departments, we are making a strong impact in filling the equity gaps that exist in our shared community.

StarVista’s Early Childhood and School-Based Services 

Director: Nancy Quiggle, PH.D. 

StarVista’s Early Childhood and School-based Services provide San Mateo County children, youth, families and farmworkers with comprehensive mental health services that build resilience, strengthen mental health, and cultivate community wellness. 

StarVista’s Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation program is currently serving more than 870 children, 208 staff, at 22 different sites.

Youth and Community Empowerment Services 

Director: Michelle Woo 

StarVista’s Youth and Community Empowerment Services ensure that San Mateo County youth feel supported as they encounter life’s challenges like unstable housing, mental health issues, navigating the foster care system, or accessing LGBTQ-centered care, empowering them to build the lives they envision. 

During the last fiscal year, StarVista’s Daybreak program served 15 teens for a combined stay of over 2,900 nights.

Wellness and Recovery Services 

Director: Ben Marks, LCSW 

StarVista’s Wellness and Recovery Services provide a range of substance use and mental health programs for youth and adults. Treatment is individualized and client centered as clients are empowered to take responsibility for their choices, get connected with tools to tackle their challenges, build support networks, and create positive life changes. 

During the last fiscal year, StarVista’s Women’s Enrichment Center served 56 women with more than 1,400 group and individual therapy sessions.

Crisis Services 

Director: Daryl Tilghman, PH.D.  

StarVista’s Crisis Services deliver extensive mental health support to children, youth, adults, and families facing mental health crises or requiring assistance through crisis intervention, suicide prevention, compassionate understanding, and connection to vital resources. 

StarVista’s 24-hour Crisis Hotline was the 3rd suicide hotline created in California and answers about 13,000 calls annually.

  • $50 can buy art therapy supplies to help children overcome trauma.
  • $100 can buy reading and educational play materials to help low income families prepare their children for kindergarten.
  • $500 helps buy linens, cooking utensils, or text books and other necessities for a former foster youth moving into a shared apartment.
  • $1,000 helps us with the cost of providing a safe home, food, and counseling for a homeless youth
