Introducing Our New Board Member, Nancy Minnig!

Introducing Our New Board Member, Nancy Minnig!

Introducing our new Board Member, Nancy Minnig! We asked our newest member to share how they were introduced to StarVista, what our mission means to them, and more!

How did you become involved with StarVista?

I was introduced to StarVista through SolMateo (formerly Community Service League). I had been looking for a local volunteer opportunity and when I met some of the members, I immediately knew that I wanted to support and volunteer with this cause. Over the last six years, I have been honored to grow within our organization and learn more about StarVista and The Mental Health Association.

What makes StarVista’s mission meaningful to you?

My sister and her daughter both passed away from drug overdoses within three years of each other. My niece left behind a son and daughter who were in grade school. Her son was bullied, got involved in drugs and alcohol, and just didn’t have the proper support from school and local services in their town. Five different rehab centers later, he was finally able to connect with a counselor who impacted him greatly and he has been able to rewrite his story and they both are thriving, living out of state. Had an agency like StarVista been available, I know they would have had the resources they needed, and the struggle would have been lessened.

What projects excite you most in the upcoming year?

I am not sure yet; however, look forward to learning more about upcoming projects.

Have you learned anything surprising about StarVista or the mental health industry that you never knew before?

Yes, I didn’t realize how many services and programs StarVista provides that are largely free to all ages and so inclusive to the diverse community in which we live. I also really like the pro-active and innovative approach StarVista uses and establishing community partners.

What is something you wish your community knew about StarVista?

It is my hope the community becomes more aware of the diverse programs and support services StarVista offers. As co-president of SolMateo, it is my mission and passion to bring awareness and continue to fundraise on behalf of StarVista.
