A Message from Jimmy Freitas, Assistant Program Manager at StarVista’s First Chance Program
A very special thanks to Officer Jon Marco Urrere-Serratio from the Burlingame Police Department for helping connect a community member in need to our First Chance program.
As the coronavirus pandemic continues to evolve, there are many agencies and businesses impacted by these changes. Businesses that can provide services to the community may be temporarily closed and we are also told that police officers should only make contact and transport if necessary.
Well, that did not stop Burlingame Police Officer Jon Marco Urrere-Serratio from doing a good deed on Friday evening. Officer Urrere-Serratio just happened to drive by when he noticed an older individual. He approached them and learned that they were homeless and needed a place to stay. Officer Serrano wanted to help the individual by assisting them to get off the streets for their safety and thought about StarVista’s First Chance program as the right place to bring them to.
He could not personally drop the client off, so Officer Urrere-Serratio called a taxicab for the client and had the taxi driver bring the client to our facilities so that they could receive our services. Also, Officer Urrere-Serratio followed the taxi and, once here at our First Chance facilities, he pulled out his wallet and paid the taxi ride with his own money! A selfless act of kindness!
This story goes to show that even during a pandemic, our community will still care for everyone’s well-being. Thank you to Officer Urrere-Serratio and the Burlingame Police Department for making a difference and continuing to make our community a safe place and helping those in need!
